The
History of the Women's Auxiliary
The
role of the Women's Auxiliary has changed and yet remains the
same in many aspects since it was organized in the early 1950's.
The Auxiliary was formed to assist at the CLCA chapter meetings
and projects, tri-boards and conventions, organize picnics and
holiday parties and look after details and facilitate events.
Its primary goals are education, friendship and the support
the California Landscape Contractors Association, both on the
state and chapter levels.
In
1988, the State Auxiliary founded LEAF, the Landscape Educational
Advancement Foundation, to guarantee the endowment of annual
scholarship funds to deserving students pursuing their education
and seeking careers in the landscape industry. To date, the
San Francisco Bay Area Chapter has established the Ken Jenner
Memorial, the Herbert Frank Memorial, the Hans Biland Memorial,
the Bill Hayes Memorial, the George Kunimoto Memorial, the Edron
Schneider Memorial, the John Lyngso Honorarium, the Paul Shogren
Memorial and the SFBA Chapter within LEAF. In the mid-90's the
grant program was added to support landscape related programs
in all levels of education. On the chapter level, the San Francisco
Bay Area Chapter Auxiliary raises funds for College Enrichment
and annually awards grants to the three local community colleges
- San Francisco City College, College of San Mateo and Foothill
College.
The
Women's Auxiliary created the Children's Science Garden Committee,
which adopted the goal of reaching young children through helping
in the development of science gardens. It is the Auxiliary's
hope to capture the hearts and minds of elementary age youth
and inspire them with the joys of planting and skills learned
in growing their own gardens. The Auxiliary established the
Humanitarian Award, which honors a contractor or CLCA chapter
who has donated 50% or more of the labor and materials for a
landscape installation project. CLCA chapters throughout the
State volunteer many hours of labor and materials to local communities
in an attempt to return to the community from which we have
benefited.
The
strongest CLCA chapters are the ones with active Auxiliaries.
Proudly, the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter has the largest
Auxiliary in the State. The Auxiliaries support the contractors
and Associate Members and, in turn, receive the benefit of becoming
a part of their world on a different level. If you'd like to
