Auxiliary Report
Happy June! Hope the warmer weather is treating you and your garden well.
The Awards Banquet is coming up quickly. Thank you to Jackie Marsey, Beth Valdez and Scooter Wren for chairing this event. It takes a lot of people to get this event to the finish line and a lot of pieces to put together, from finding judges, handling the paperwork (thank you Laura Leuer!), to planning the banquet menu. It all comes together at the banquet on June 27 at the Embassy Suites Hilton in Milpitas, where we announce the winners. The Auxiliary will hold a raffle benefitting LEAF (Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation) at the awards banquet. LEAF provides scholarships to horticulture students throughout the state. Your purchase of raffle tickets at our chapter events benefits the future of the Green Industry. Good luck to all the entrants in the Awards program and maybe you will be the lucky winner of the Auxiliary’s raffle.
Our May Auxiliary has not occurred as of this writing. I will update you in July on what is happening in the Auxiliary. Here is a recap and updates of upcoming dates:
- The Auxiliary Potluck: A save the date notice went out in May for the Auxiliary Potluck on Sunday, August 9, co-hosted by Cindy Singletary and Mary and Barry Cohen, to be held at the Cohen’s home in Saratoga. An invitation with details on start time, and what to bring will go out in June. You need to be an Auxiliary member to come to the Potluck. And it’s not too late to become a member! CLICK HERE for the membership application. We would love to have you join our fun and lively group. Mary and Barry Cohen have hosted the potluck many times, but I have a feeling this one will be a show-stopper you won’t want to miss. Put August 9 on your calendar today!
- The Chapter Picnic comes quickly on the heels of the potluck on Sunday, September 13 at Cuesta Park in Mountain View. The day begins at 11 a.m., with the horseshoe tournament starting around 11:30. Joseph and Alex Domine are the team to beat this year. Better start practicing now. Always a good time, with lots of food and friends. The chili cook-off and the dessert competition are a treat all by themselves!
- Chapter Christmas Party: We are confirmed for Saturday, December 12 at the San Mateo Elks Lodge. It will be dinner, exact timing still under discussion. I hope you will join us to start your holiday season.
Happy Father’s Day. I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

2026 Achievement Awards
A Heartfelt Thank You
As we wrap up our 3rd and final day of judging with Kristin Gallego and Rick Mathews, I can honestly say this week has been such a meaningful experience.
Spending time with Kristin and Rick and listening to them talk through each property was truly something special. They noticed the details — the way a property was laid out, how special features were placed with intention, how plant choices complemented the shape, color, and design of the homes, buildings, and surrounding spaces. Listening to them made me slow down, step back, and really take it all in.
Their expertise, field experience, design background, and deep respect for the craft came through at every stop. They carefully took their time with each entry, spending no less than 15–20 minutes reviewing each category item listed on the entry forms. Every note mattered. Every detail was considered. Every project was given the time and respect it deserved.
And I absolutely need to pause and thank our Drivers and Navigators. The time and care you put into setting up the routes made all the difference. Because of your planning, each day moved efficiently, the judges were able to stay on schedule, and every property received the attention it deserved. You kept us moving, organized, and calm — which is no small thing during three full days of judging.
And let me just say — the properties entered this year were absolutely beautiful. Each one was a showcase of artistic vision, creative design, thoughtful planning, and the hard work it takes to bring a landscape to life. The passion behind these projects was easy to see, and the effort presented to us this week was truly award-worthy.
To everyone who entered this year: great job. You should be incredibly proud of what you and your teams created.
And to those who may have thought about entering but held back — trust your gut. Trust your vision. Trust the work your team is doing every day. This program is not just about trophies or titles; it is about recognizing the creativity, skill, pride, and heart that goes into this industry. Your work deserves to be seen, celebrated, and appreciated.
I hope next year even more of our contractors take that leap and enter a project. You may be surprised at just how inspiring your work is when others get the chance to slow down, walk through it, and see the story behind the landscape.
Thank you to our judges, our contractors, our crews, our Drivers and Navigators, and everyone who helped make this week such a beautiful reminder of why this program matters.
And I cannot let this message go out without recognizing Laura Leuer, who has truly been the cornerstone of this entire program. Laura’s organization, attention to detail, steady guidance, and behind-the-scenes care are what helped keep all of the moving pieces rooted and growing in the right direction.
Every successful program needs good soil, strong hands, and someone willing to help plant the seeds long before anything blooms. Laura has been exactly that for us. Her work may not always be front and center, but it is deeply felt in every schedule, every entry, every route, and every detail that helped make this week possible.
Thank you, Laura, for being such an important part of the foundation of this program.
