Auxiliary Report
Summer time is here! Lots to report this month so I will get right to it.
The Awards of Excellence banquet has come and gone. Huge sigh of relief! Alot of people contributed to the success of the banquet. Thank you to Craig and Vivian Rapp for volunteering to chair this event. They had a huge amount of help from President Beth Valdez and her family (and probably everyone at Davey Tree), Scooter Wren from Peninsula Building Materials, and Jackie Marsey and Dominic Bryan from Paradise Garden and Landscape. Kudos to all for getting 114 people to the banquet. It was a terrific presentation of awards and wonderful to see the fantastic work from San Francisco Bay Area Chapter contractors. Congratulations to all of the winners.
The Auxiliary held our raffle benefiting LEAF (Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation) at the banquet. Thank you to Dominic Bryan and Jackie Marsey for selling tickets. We raised $800 for scholarships to students in horticulture programs throughout California. Thank you also to our prize donors for your generosity and wonderful gifts. The raffle winners were:
- Steven Van Dongen from Opulands Landscape Design and Construction won the basket by Girvin and Lesley Peters
- Girvin Peters won the basket by Alice Domine
- Francisco Hernandez from Site One and our MC for the evening won the basket by Rick Camin, Camin Landscaping
- Eric Esparza Ruiz from Urbanscape Landscape won the $100 gift certificate to Chef Chu’s donated by Charlene Ott
- Simon Parrott from Colony Landscape won the Grand Prize, donated by Beth Valdez, Scooter Wren and Jackie Marsey, which included a $25 gift certificate to Castello di Amorosa winery in Napa Valley and some wine accessories.
Congratulations to all of the winners. Enjoy your winnings. Thank you everyone who contributed to the event.
The Auxiliary had our 2nd meeting of 2025 on May 28 at the home of Charlene Ott in Los Altos. We were a small but fun group of eight. A brief summary is below.
- Save the date of Sunday, August 10 for the annual Auxiliary Potluck to be held at…the home of Charlene Ott! Thank you, Charlene, for volunteering to hold this always fun event again. The menu will be quite different than what we have experienced before. More details to follow when the invitations go out in July.
- The Chapter Picnic is scheduled for Sunday, September 7 at Cuesta Park in Mountain View. Thank you, Rick Camin, for chairing this committee and putting on a great BBQ lunch for everyone.
- We are investigating Mezza Luna Italian Restaurant in Princeton harbor on the San Mateo County coast for the Christmas Party. More details to follow soon. Thank you to Vicky Parrott for working on this.
Lots going on in the chapter even though it is summer. Check the website for event updates and the latest news. Have a great summer and I hope to see you soon.

In Memoriam
The SFBA Chapter Remembers…
ELEANOR “ ELLIE” HAYES: The beloved wife for 47 years of Willard “Bill” Hayes, Eleanor passed away peacefully on February 12, 2025, just three months before her 100th birthday. Bill and Ellie purchased Automatic Rain Company, an irrigation supply business, in 1968 where, through Bill’s ability to lead and inspire and Ellie’s unstoppable energy and shared business tenacity, they expanded from three to twelve branches in northern California and many across eight states. Automatic Rain Company was truly a family-run business, with the involvement of their four children, Maribeth, Marty, Bill Jr. and Doug.
Automatic Rain joined CLCA in 1970. Eleanor joined the Auxiliary in 1970, received Auxiliary Life Membership in 1990 and was named Chapter Associate Member of the Year in 1983. They were active members in our Chapter and the State throughout the decades, earned CLCA Life Membership in 1995 and were always glowing and constant symbols of true dedication and professionalism for the benefit of CLCA, the Auxiliary and the Green Industry.
An intimate Celebration of Life was held on May 20th, which would have been Ellie’s 100th birthday, at her beloved Filoli Gardens. To honor Eleanor’s life, her family kindly requests that donations be made to the “Willard and Eleanor Hayes Memorial Fund” in the Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation (LEAF) c/o CLCA Headquarters, 1545 River Park Drive Suite 525, Sacramento, CA 95815 or to the Children’s Home Society of California at chs-ca.org.
HANS COAZ: It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of longtime CLCA member and friend to many, Hans Coaz, who passed away on June 10, 2025 after a courageous battle with cancer. A proud Swiss man, he lived his life with quiet strength, dignity, and grace. His warmth, integrity, and gentle humor touched everyone who knew him. Hans was also an avid train enthusiast who converted one of the bedrooms in their home into a train room!
Hans established Hans Coaz Landscaping Inc. in 1980, joined CLCA that same year and earned his Life Membership in 2005. He was the Chapter photographer for many years and was responsible for most of the photos that now memorialize the rich history of the SFBA Chapter. Hans and his joyful wife, Heidy, could always be found energetically dancing the polka at State meetings, Chapter achievement award banquets and holiday parties when music was part of the evening’s celebrations.
Memorial service details will be shared once they have been finalized. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Grassroots Ecology.
