Auxiliary Report
Happy end of summer to all. Thank you, Mary and Barry Cohen for hosting the Auxiliary potluck on August 17. Wonderful weather, great food by our awesome Auxiliary group, and a nice outdoor vibe at the Cohen home in Saratoga. Happy to see 16 people in attendance, including our newest Auxiliary member, Vivian Rapp. Welcome back, Vivian!
Come join your CLCA friends at the Chapter Picnic. IT’S HERE! Sunday, September 8 at Cuesta Park in Mountain View. All are welcome. It is a fun, family and friend-oriented day. The picnic starts at 11 a.m., the horseshoe tournament will start at 11:30 a.m., and barbecue lunch at 12:30 p.m. Thank you to our picnic committee (Chair Rick Camin, Alice Domine, Vicky Parrott, Michelle Ott, Cindy Singletary, Girvin and Lesley Peters, and Charlene Ott) for putting this event together. Games for all ages will be available throughout the day. The cookie competition and chili cook-off winners will be announced around 2:30 (the judges need time to do their tasting!). Watch out for extra spicy. Presentation of the horseshoe tournament trophy concludes the picnic at 4 p.m.
We have two entrants in the cookie competition and 6 horseshoe teams signed up already. You better start practicing and testing out those recipes. Sounds like a job I might like…taste tester at a cookie factory! Yum, yum. Looking forward to tasting all those treats, spicy chili and all. A reservation form is online at www.clcasfba.org and a Constant Contact invitation has gone out. Pricing is the same as last year, $10 for adults and kids 12 and over, $5 for children under 12. Tuesday, September 3 is the deadline to sign up.
It is time once again to renew your Auxiliary membership or join the Auxiliary for the first time. Established in the 1950’s, the Auxiliary was formed as an assistance and support group to CLCA, but we are also equally interested and involved in what happens in the Green Industry. The Auxiliary organizes several chapter functions, including the picnic and the Christmas Holiday Party. In addition, the Auxiliary raises money for LEAF (Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation), which was founded by the Auxiliary in 1988. LEAF awards scholarships to horticulture students in California, helping to ensure the next generation of the Green Industry. The joys of fellowship and working together for a common goal have led to lasting friendships among CLCA families. I would love it if everyone joined the Auxiliary and we welcome your participation on whatever level of interest you may have and wish to share. A membership application is available online at www.clcasfba.org. If you are already a member, your renewal notice will appear in your email inbox soon.
Our final Auxiliary meeting of 2024 will be Wednesday, October 30, hosted by our current Chapter Presidents Barry and Mary Cohen. It will be dinner, exact location still to be determined. I hope you will join us.

A Saturday Afternoon Garden Party
Under intermittent cloudy skies and a comfortably warm afternoon, members and their spouse and significant others gathered in the back yard of Barry and Mary Cohen’s abode, better known as “Cohen Park”, to celebrate the Chapter Auxiliary and the beautiful friendships that have been nurtured over the decades.
It was wonderful to have Charlene Ott and returning members, Craig and Vivian Rapp in attendance, along with Cindy Singletary, Brigitte and Ernst Lehmann, Pat and Zach Coney, Lesley and Girvin Peters, Tom Ellington and Elle Taketa, Jackie Marsey and Dominic Bryan. Unfortunately, Valerie Whitehill and Marin Villalpando took ill suddenly and were not able to make it.
Thank you to Dominic for volunteering to be our Grill Master. The ribeye and New York steaks were done to perfection! To round out the menu there were delicious appetizers, broiled salmon, fruit salads, coleslaw, macaroni salad, and for dessert? Lesley’s chocolate chip cake, macarons, a fruit tart and my flan were a perfect ending to a delicious meal!

LEAF SCHOLARSHIP FUND ESTABLISHED AS WE SAY FAREWELL TO LEO OTT
During the recent Legacy Celebration, the Leo and Charlene Ott Fund was established in the Landscape Educational Advancement Foundation (LEAF), CLCA’s scholarship foundation, by fellow CLCA member and dear friend, Rick Camin, to commemorate the multi-decade long service of both Leo and Charlene to CLCA, the Auxiliary and LEAF. Little did we know we would have to say goodbye to Leo so soon after. He passed away June 26, 2024, surrounded by family, after a 2-month battle with leukemia.
Leo was the first-born child to Leo and Nina Ott in Shaffhausen, Switzerland and he learned
all about hard work from the start, living on a farm alongside the family’s restaurant. Throughout his life he was all about hard work and good times. In 1954, at age 20, he boarded a ship to New York and then a flight to San Francisco. He was drafted into the US Army in 1958 and served for 2 years. After completing his military service, he returned to the Bay Area and began beautiful landscape installations and eagerly learned about plants, irrigation, concrete work, rockwork and much more and liked this field of work.
He loved to dance and could be found at the Swiss Club in Newark or in Ripon, the German Club in San Jose, however it was at the Italian Club in Mountain View where he met Charlene Pool. They were married in 1962 and subsequently welcomed son Ed in 1963 and daughter Cathy in 1964.
Leo started Leo Ott Landscape in 1965 where he found his niche doing commercial landscapes for Peery/Arrillaga in Silicon Valley. Leo joined CLCA in 1968, quickly found a close-knit family in the Association, became involved in leadership roles and served as secretary in 1970, vice president in 1971 and president in 1972. He received life membership in 1993 and remained very involved in Chapter and State events well beyond his retirement.
Leo won his first State award in large commercial/industrial installation in 1971 and continued winning many Chapter and State awards thereafter, acknowledging his high-quality projects throughout his career. He also served as State Trophy Awards judge in 1994.
Leo will always be remembered for his easy-going personality, the twinkle in his eye, his strong hands and unending work ethic. If you would like to make a donation to the Leo and Charlene Ott Fund in Leo’s memory, simply send a check payable to “LEAF”, c/o CLCA, 1491 River Park Dr., Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95815. Please note the “Leo and Charlene Ott Fund” in the memo of your check.
Leo, you will never be forgotten and will forever be a treasure to your grateful CLCA Family.
