Auxiliary Report
Summer sure zoomed by! Kids are back in school and the trees are already changing color for fall. We seem to get closer to Christmas at a faster pace every year. Is that old age talking?
Thank you, Charlene Ott for hosting the Auxiliary Potluck on August 10. Always a wonderful time at the potluck. There were 18 people in attendance on a sunny but not too hot Sunday afternoon. Delicious food with a smoked turkey as the main entree. Thank you, Dominic Bryan for smoking the turkey. Thank you everyone who attended. Your contributions were delicious. If you want to be on the invitation list for 2026, you will find an Auxiliary membership application elsewhere in this issue of the Bay Breeze. I look forward to welcoming you as an Auxiliary member at next year’s potluck. Like Christmas, it seems so far away! But 2026 will be here before you know it.
The Chapter Picnic is here! Sunday, September 7 at Cuesta Park in Mountain View. It is a fun, family and friend-oriented day. Thank you again to our Auxiliary committee (Rick Camin, Alice Domine, Vicky Parrott, Jackie Marsey, Charlene Ott, and Girvin and Lesley Peters) for organizing this fantastic event. The fun begins at 11 a.m., with BBQ lunch, including chicken, beef brisket and tri-tip, at 12:30 p.m. The horseshoe tournament is always a crowd pleaser and there will be games for all ages throughout the day. Announcement of the dessert competition winners and the presentation of the horseshoe tournament trophy signal the end of another great CLCA event. I look forward to seeing you there.
The last Auxiliary meeting of 2025 will be Wednesday, October 15, hosted by Chapter President Beth Valdez from Davey Tree. Time and place still to be determined. A Paperless Post invitation will go out in September. We welcome any prospective new members at any of our meetings. I hope to see you there, as we finalize plans for the Christmas Party and start making plans for 2026.
Enjoy what’s left of summer and have a wonderful start to the fall season. See you soon.

Essentials of FireSafe Landscaping
by Lindsay Ono, QWEL, 2025 President, California Landscape Contractors Association
Wildfires have long been a concern for California, and with the state’s population continuing to grow, the threat is only intensifying.
One of the key factors contributing to this heightened risk is the expansion of the wildland-urban interface, areas where residential neighborhoods meet and blend with natural landscapes. These zones are especially vulnerable to catastrophic wildfires, placing both lives and property in jeopardy.
Despite this increasing risk, many residents remain unprepared. While most homeowners might have a plan in place for a kitchen fire, few consider the dangers posed by wildfires that threaten the exterior of their homes, yards and entire communities.
During a wildfire, structures face multiple hazards: flying embers, direct flames, and radiant heat. High winds common in wildfire events not only drive the flames but also carry embers over long distances. These embers can ignite dry leaves, debris-filled rain gutters, rooftops or bark mulch, creating new fire outbreaks far from the initial blaze. Once ignited, flames can quickly engulf a structure. Even radiant heat alone, transmitted through the air from burning objects, can be enough to ignite nearby materials without direct contact with fire.
The devastating wildfires that swept through Southern California caught many homeowners off guard. In retrospect, it’s clear that proactive measures could have significantly reduced the extent of the damage. Building wildfire resilience starts with public education and homeowner engagement. Residents must understand the risks and implement strategies to protect their homes, such as clearing flammable vegetation, maintaining clean rooflines and gutters, and establishing defensible space.
